Sack Magu, His Sins More Grievous Than Daura’s, Osinbajo Told

Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has been urged to sack the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, who made the call in a statement by his media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu, claimed that Magu has committed more grievous offences than that the sacked and disgraced Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, who was dismissed by Osinbajo for unleashing his men on members of the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Wike claimed that the recent freezing of bank accounts belonging to the Benue and Akwa Ibom State governments by the Magu-led EFCC was more grievous than the siege laid to NASS by the some hood-wearing DSS operatives a few days ago.

The governor accused the EFCC boss of “overthrowing the Governments of Benue and Akwa Ibom States” because the freezing of the states’ bank accounts was “tantamount to the closure of the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary of the two states.”

Wike said, “I am calling for the sack of the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu for overthrowing a tier government. The mere fact that the two accounts have been re-opened does not mean that a crime was not committed.

“When you freeze the account of the State Government, you have overthrown that government. Without funds, a state cannot function. This means the shutdown of government business at Executive, Legislature and Judiciary in the affected states”.

According to the Rivers State governor, Magu, by his deeds, “has the capacity to destroy democracy.”

Wike said, “The Chairman of that Agency overthrew the Governments of Benue and Akwa Ibom States. Remember that this country is a Federation consisting of federating Units. As a federal system, we have three tiers of Government. These tiers of Government share the funds that accrue to the Federation monthly.

“It disheartens some of us to see the inconsistency of this government. This particular agency thrives on impunity. It disobeys court orders at will and on reckless anti-democratic actions. This impunity must stop”.

The governor further alleged that the EFCC froze Benue Government’s bank account because the governor recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), adding that the case of Akwa Ibom was related to Wednesday’s defection of former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, from the PDP to the APC.
