Salah Overtakes Messi In Ballon d’Or Odds

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has overtaken Lionel Messi and is now just behind Cristiano Ronaldo for the Ballon d’Or winner, according to bookmakers across the country.

They have installed the Egyptian forward as the second favourite for the award, cutting his odds from 11/1 into just 7/4.

The 25-year-old scored the two opening goals against his former side during the 5-2 victory at Anfield, and assisted the following two for Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino as the Reds took charge of the semi-final tie.

Following his star-studded performance against Roma on Tuesday night, which he received a whopping 78% of bets for the individual award, and sent his odds tumbling.

Ronaldo is still 13/8 favourite to scoop the trophy come December, Salah is second at 7/4, now in front Lionel Messi who is drifting to 4/1.

Brazil’s Neymar comes next at 14/1, followed by Belgium’s Kevin de Bruyne at the same price.

The Egyptian star has also been backed for top scorer at the World Cup, attracting 86% of bets for the Golden Boot.

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek said: “Mo Salah has had a quite phenomenal season, but last night was the icing on the cake.

“Given that the Ballon D’Or betting is over the course of the calendar year rather than a season, Messi will need a phenomenal World Cup to get involved.

“In our book, Salah should be favourite and represents huge value still.”

“If you think he’s the best in the world, write it or say it. He is in outstandingly good shape, in world-class shape, 100 per cent. That’s good,”Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said.

“To be the best in the world you need to do that over a longer period, I think. There are a few others who are not too bad. He is a fantastic player and I’m really happy to have him,” he added.

Liverpool will travel to the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday with Barcelona’s quarter-final capitulation in mind after Roma came back from a 4-1 first-leg defeat to win the tie on the away goals rule.
