Scientists Discover Compound That Repairs Cancerous Cell

Scientists have discovered a compound that repairs or makes cancerous cells to commit suicide after fatal genome damage occurs.

Genome is a complete set of genes or genetic material present in a cell or organism.

The Russian St. Petersburg Biologist during an experiment created the compound which is able to kill about 40 percent of cancerous cells.

Before now scientists have been trying to find a molecule that will neutralise the protein and help cells fight against small mutations and larger breakdowns in DNA.

According to Russian news agency TASS Professor Alexander Garabagiu, faculty member of St. Petersburg State Technological Institute, said the new compound is much more effective than whatever drug is in the market at the moment.

A large number of cancerous tumours are caused by the breakdown of the “p53 gene”, which is responsible for DNA repair and self-destruction in case of fatal genome damage.

This is often caused by the increased activity of a protein called MDM2, which neutralises the molecules of “p53”.
