Senate Constitues Delegation To Meet Buhari On IGP’s Alleged Ploy To Frame Saraki

The Senate on Wednesday appointed nine lawmakers to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari over an alleged plot by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to frame Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Saraki, had during plenary on Wednesday, alleged a plan by the police chief to alter a statement given by cultism suspects in order to implicate him.

In the revelation that appears similar to what Senator Dino Melaye is alleging, Saraki accused IGP Idris of directing the Kwara State Police Commissioner to transfer the cultism suspects, who were arrested in the state to Abuja in order to have their submission to the police altered.

Saraki, in his narration to Senators at Wednesday’s plenary, said: “Last night, my state governor revealed to me an information at his disposal that a group of suspects who have been arrested in our state for cultism, whose investigation has been completed and were about to be under prosecution under the state law on the advice of DPP and the ministry of justice, all of a sudden being ordered to be transferred to Abuja this morning.

“The information reaching him from the commissioner of police (is) that they have been directed by IGP to bring them to Abuja. With the information that he has, they would find how to alter their statement already made in Ilorin and try and implicate the state government and particularly myself. I felt that as we speak now, these suspects are already here in Abuja.”

Speaking on the order raised by the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, Senate Leader, described the meeting with the President as “the best”, as it gives the lawmakers an opportunity to lay their complain directly to the Commander in Chief.

“Today would have been the best day for us to walk in and pass the 2018 budget but that’s not to be. I will subscribe to the idea that we don’t continue to beat a dead horse to constitute an ad-hoc committee to invite the police to explain or the IG. The idea of meeting Mr President to me is the best,” Lawan said.

“Let me say that some people could be taking advantage at certain points to do certain things that Mr President would have no idea. Therefore, it’s an opportunity for our delegation to meet Mr President to explain everything.”

Deputy Senate Speaker, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the matter, then set up a nine-member delegation headed by Saraki to meet with the president.

Members of the delegation include, Lawan, Olusola Adeyeye, Chief Whip, and Godswill Akpabio, Senate Minority Leader.

Others are senators Danjuma Goje, Sam Anyanwu, Aliyu Wammako, Fatima Raji Rasaki and Oluremi Tinubu.
