Senate Invasion: Our Entire Democracy Is In Danger – Atiku

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed shock and utter embarrassment that ‘‘hoodlums’’ could gain access to the Nigerian Senate to cart away its symbol of office in broad daylight.

The Senate’s Mace, it would be recalled, was forcefully taken away by a group of thugs said to be led by Senator Ovie Omo-agege of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday.

In his reaction, Atiku said the impunity with which the suspected thugs made away with the Mace shows that ‘‘our entire democracy is in danger.’’

In a statement by the Atiku Media Office, the Vice President said:

“I am utterly embarrassed, shocked and outraged by this ugly development because it is not only a threat to a major democratic institution, but also represents a grave danger to the survival of our democracy.”

“If criminals could commit such security breach with impunity, it means that our entire democracy is in danger”, Atiku said, adding that “those behind this illegality to avoid creating a monster that could consume them.”

“It is unacceptable and reprehensible to subject the National Assembly to this intimidation and humiliation. This attack by thugs should not go unpunished no matter who is involved”, he added.
