Senators Kick Against Defence Minister On Anti-Grazing Law

The Senate has frowned against comments credited to the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, that states with anti-open grazing law should suspend same.

Dan-Ali on Tuesday after a meeting of security chiefs with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House called on state governments to suspend the law as part of efforts to stem killings allegedly by herdsmen.

However, the Senate at plenary on Wednesday by a motion moved by Senator Barnabas Gemade, APC, Benue, asked that the minister withdraws the statement.

Gemade in a motion under matters of public importance stated that on Tuesday seven people were killed and several houses burnt in his senatorial district.

“The most disturbing is the fact that upon all that was discussed at the security meeting held on Tuesday what came out from the minister was that the anti-grazing law should be withdrawn,” Gemade told plenary.

He appealed to his colleagues to make a resolution asking the defence minister should to withdraw the statement because the killings started before the enactment of the law.

Senate President Bukola Saraki who was presiding put the motion to a voice vote and it was unanimously carried.
