Former Minister of Education and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign, Oby Ezekwesili, has tackled the National Assembly over Senator Shehu Sani’s recent disclosure that a member of the Senate receives more than N13million monthly as running cost.
Sani, who represents Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, had about a week ago revealed that he and his colleagues receive the sum monthly.
The Federal lawmaker had confirmed that in addition to the over N750, 000 monthly consolidated salary and allowances of each member of the Senate, each Senator also gets N13.5 million as running cost.
Reacting on Monday via her official Twitter handle, the Former Minister described it as ‘financial rascality’ on the part of the Senators.
“Senator Shehu Sani has in a rare moment of penance for the financial rascality of our National Assembly done partial DISCLOSURE on their GOOD LIFE at the expense of the POOR. He DISCLOSED some of what WE – Citizens – have long ASKED Bukola Saraki & Yakubu Dogara to do. MORE REMAINS,” said Ezekwesili.
Thw Bring Back Our Girls co-convener said she feels sorry for the young Nigerians for being ignorant on national issues such as this.
“You are a young Nigerian &cannot see the wicked hand you are being dealt? You “entertained” by @NGRSenate @HouseNGR , I kuku sorry for YOU.”
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi while also reacting to his colleague’s outburst said it was nothing new.
According to him, the same information had been in various line items and expenditure heads of the budget of the National Assembly, which has been made public.
“Almost all holders of elective and appointive offices have running costs allocated to their offices and that cannot be said to be part of their salaries” Abdullahi said.
The Senate spokesman denied allegations of moves to place Senator Sani under suspension for “blowing the whistle” on the Red Chamber.
