President Donald Trump’s White House national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned Monday night following controversy regarding his contacts with the Russian government.

Flynn, who once headed US military intelligence, was said to have misled administration officials regarding his communications with the Russian ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak and was potentially vulnerable to blackmail by Moscow.

The CNN reports that President Trump was warned last month by the Justice Department on General Flynn’s involvement with Russia.

The move comes less than a month into his job, making him one of the shortest-serving senior presidential advisers in modern history.

Flynn said he was honoured to have served the American people in such a “distinguished” manner, despite admitting to “inadvertently briefed” the now Vice President Mike Pence with “incomplete information” about his calls Sergey Kislyak before taking office.

“I inadvertently briefed the Vice President-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology,” Flynn wrote, on his resignation letter.

“I am tendering my resignation, honored to have served our nation and the American people in such a distinguished way.

“I know with the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence and the superb team they are assembling, this team will go down in history as one of the greatest presidencies in US history.”

The White House said Trump had accepted Flynn’s resignation, and named retired lieutenant general Joseph Kellogg, who recently served as National Security Council chief of staff to be interim national security advisor.
