UN Bound Amina Mohammed Bids Farewell To FEC, Nigeria

Minister of Environment, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, on Wednesday attended her final Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided by Acting President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, as she is set to resume her post as the deputy secretary-general of the United Nations.

Mrs. Mohammed is expected to start her new role at the UN on March 7, 2017.

In his remark, Osinbajo described the out-going minister as a role model to Nigerian women, adding that her contributions to the Muhammadu Buhari-led cabinet has been fascinating.

She was also appreciated by a couple of other ministers, who lauded her achievements both domestic and international.

In her response, the very emotional Mohammed said she was honoured to have served Nigeria in the capacity as she did, while promising to fly the country’s flag up there at the United Nations.

She advised young girls and women to take a clue from her and work towards achieving their dreams and aspirations.

“This is for the young girls and women” she said.

Before her appointment as UN deputy secretary general, Mrs. Mohammaed had previously worked at the UN as special adviser to the former secretary-general, Ban Ki-Moon. She was also senior special assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan on the Millennium Development Goals and was appointed as environment minister by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
