‘It’s Unconstitutional To Zone Nigeria’s Presidency’ – Donald Duke

Former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke has frowned at the zoning of Nigeria’s Presidency, stating that it is “unconstitutional”.

Duke made the statement while speaking on Hard Copy anchored by Maope Ogun on Channels TV.

His statement comes at a time that Chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) reprimanded Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti Sate for declaring his intention to run for Presidency in 2019 as it has been zoned to the North.

He said, “I have never subjected myself to zoning, when I ran for Governor I was not afforded zoning, everybody and everyone was able to run in Cross River.

“Besides it’s my constitutional right to run, you can’t zone my right, I think it’s unconstitutional to zone.

“Besides, like I said to you I was born a Nigerian, I wasn’t born an Easterner or Westerner, I was born after Independence. So my outlook is Nigerian.”

The ex-governor further said Nigeria was in dire straits and should abandon zoning and go for the best.

“I think we have a constitution. Whatever arrangement you make must be subject to the constitution.

“When you are in dire straits medically, you don’t care where the medical doctor comes from. I think we are in dire straits right now, we should seek the best amongst us.”
