[UPDATE] Fire Razes INEC Office In Gwagwalada

The offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Gwagwalada Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory was on Friday razed down by fire.

The incident which happened at about 1:30pm saw men of the Fire Service battle in vain to salvage the building from been completely burnt.

An eyewitness, Mallam Abdul Abdulkareem, told The Whistler that the fire may have been caused by generator explosion, adding that the response time of the fire service personnel was poor.

“Fire service did not get here on time and when they did, it was not long they ran out of water and were racing back for more water. But there is nothing left in that office, I can tell,” Abdulkareem said.

However, new information indicate that the fire was started by the security man at the premises who wanted to burn an area in the compound overtaken by weeds.

The unnamed security man is alleged to have set the brushes on fire and left to pray, only for the dry harmattan wind to help spread the fire to the building.

The inferno drew a large crowd of onlookers.
