WAFU Cup: Nigeria Draw Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire Face Togo

The Super Eagles of Nigeria has been drawn in Zone A of the 2017 West African Football Union Cup of Nations (WAFU Cup) which will be hosted by Ghana from 9 September to 24 September.

The tournament will take place at the Sekondi Stadium and the Cape Coast Stadium, home to Ebusua Dwarfs football club, Central Region, Ghana.

The draw was held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on Thursday where the Nigeria national team was drawn with Sierra Leone in their first game in Sekondi.

Other fixtures in the Zone A draws sees host Ghana play Gambia in the opening match of the tournament, Mali faces Mauritania and Guinea to slug it out with Guinea-Bissau.

In the Zone B fixtures, which will be played in the Cape Coast Stadium, Ivory Coast will play long-time rivals Togo in their opening lap. Benin Republic will face Cape Verde while, Senegal will face Liberia. The zone B fixtures will also see Burkina Faso confront Niger.

The WAFU Nations Cup is an association football competition that is contested by representative teams of the West African Football Union.

The tournament was first played in Togo in 1974 with a view to establishing a regional competition similar to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
