Where Buhari’s Govt And APC Missed It

There has been no time in recent history that the Nigerian people were so divided along tribal and religious lines than during the 2015 presidential election. There has been no time also that the nation has been so heated up politically, socially and economically than within the two years of this government. While anybody can advance any reasons or rationalize these troubles, the fact remains that the new government refused or were unable to mend the fences that the electioneering and politicking process broke.

No nation progresses in disunity ditto to families and establishments. If Nigeria was one larger family as it is supposed to be, then the APC- led government and President Buhari had the duty to consider uniting the people of Nigeria socially and psychologically a task that should be on the priority list.

Agreed that elections and politics bring so much disagreement, but after elections comes the burden of governance which both the winning party and winning individuals must discharge. The truth is that to the electorate and the masses, immediately after elections, their interest shifts from who is on the governing seat to how well their affairs as a people are governed. A leader who wants to succeed must first seek to build the wall of peace across his constituency irrespective of how the electioneering battles were fought and won. This is the first step to good governance which the present administration failed to do.

Any good observer will agree that almost two years after the present administration assumed office, utterances and body languages from leadership quarters remain as if they are still on campaign mood. previous administrations are vilified and demonized for all nation’s woes and bad economic experiences. To make matters worse, ministerial appointments gives obvious impression that there are the victors and there are the vanquished. All these put together continue jeopardize the fragile unity that once existed , and which I think successive democratic governments should, in the spirit of love of country, seek to nurture.

You cannot please everybody. That is a fact. But the evidence of good leadership is the ability to be fair to all stakeholders.

Yes. A house divided against itself cannot stand. The present administration should think of bringing the minds of Nigerians together. This has to be done so that the labour of our heroes past will not be in vain. They should show some leadership and “fatherly” role of carrying every group, ethnicity, or region along irrespective of what roles they played during the last elections. the APC led government should prove to Nigerians that it has the capability to lead Nigeria and out-perform its predecessor -ruling party PDP by displaying socio-political maturity that is required to bind and move a “fragmented” nation forward. There is no need to pretend all is well. The apparent exclusion of some ethnic groups or regions in development programmes or key appointments will continue to cause agitations here and there. The abysmal silence to unchecked herdsmen killings and maiming of Nigerians can never help to bind us together.

A continuous fragility of peace in a house will always be seen as a sign of incompetence of whoever is in charge of the household. It is not late for the APC led government to wake up from its euphoria of having won elections and realize the huge responsibilities that their victory places on their shoulder, and ensure they live up to them. Posterity will always be the fair judge, but unfortunately, it’s judgment comes when it is difficult to make amends. The time to make amends is now.
