World Cup: Senegal Defeats Poland, Grabs Africa’s First Win
Senegal began their World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Poland at Spartak stadium on Tuesday.
The West Africans went ahead in 37th minute after an own-goal by Thiago Cionek.
They doubled their advantage in the 60 minute after a costly error by Poland midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak.
Krychowiak played a high, aimless backpass that striker M’Baye Niang controlled ahead of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny before tapping into an empty net.
Krychowiak pulled a goal back in the 86th minute with a header from Kamil Grosicki’s free-kick but Senegal held on.
Making only their second World Cup appearance, Senegal became the first African side to record a win in their opening fixture at the tournament.
They join Japan – who beat Colombia earlier on Tuesday – on three points at the top of group H.
