“By the grace of God, victory will be ours. I hope the boys will give their very best. I am sure and confident that they are well prepared for the important encounter.

“This is an important encounter to us and I trust it is going to be a great victory for us,’’ he said.

Eagles will have to overcome the two-time World Cup winners at the Saint Petersburg Stadium on Tuesday, to stand a chance of progressing into the round of 16.

The Coach Gernot Rohr’s men head into the game after defeating Iceland 2-0 in their second game, thanks to Ahmed Musa brace, while the South Americans were humiliated 3-0 by Croatia.

Argentina and Nigeria are well acquainted with each other in international competitions. Not only have they crossed swords four times at the FIFA World Cup, but they also contested the final of the Olympic football tournament in 2008, with Argentina winning 1-0.

Four members of that Argentina Olympic side are still in the Albiceleste squad for Russia 2018: Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano, Sergio Aguero, and Angel Di Maria, who scored the winning goal in Beijing.

The last four meetings of the two countries at the Mundial have been in favour of the South Americans.

If Nigeria scales this hurdle, they will be the first African nation to go through the next round at this year’s world, as Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia have all been eliminated.

While Senegal will have to defeat Colombia on Thursday to go through to the next round.
