Yobe Attack: 48 Of 94 Missing Students Return

48 of the “missing” 94 students of Government Girls Technical College, Dapchi, have returned, the Yobe state government says.

Recall that 94 of the schoolgirls were declared missing on Monday, after an attack by members of the Boko Haram sect.

The students were said to have fled into nearby bushes after the insurgents invaded the school.

“After the roll call, 610 out the total number of 704 students have returned. We are still searching for the remaining 94 students,” one of the teachers in the school was quoted to have said.

“We cannot say [if they have been abducted], because the insurgents went into the students’ hostel, and many of these students scaled the fence and escaped into the bushes.”

Abdumaliki Sunmonu, Yobe police commissioner, had said the Force have been unable to establish if the insurgents abducted any of the missing girls.

But reacting on Wednesday, Mohammed Lamin, the state commissioner of education, said a total of 48 of the missing schoolgirls have returned.

According to Lamin, 28 returned on Tuesday night, whle 20 more returned on Wednesday.

Most of the students were said to have been rescued by villagers in bushes around Dapchi.

“This has brought down the 94 missing students realised at the yesterday headcount to 48 this morning,” the commissioner said.

“We are still hopeful that more are returning soon.”
