Sudan’s Ban On Female Genital Mutilation Sparks Favourable Reactions

Wide reactions have followed the recent ban on female genital mutilation(FGM) in Sudan.

FGM also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision is the cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia.

Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund also confirmed the development, adding that it was a win-win for the Sudanese women and for the continent.

“Thrilled that #Sudan has banned female genital mutilation; a hard-won victory in a country where an estimated 9 out of 10 women have been subjected to the harmful practice.

“Thanks to all involved in this herculean effort. We will never give up!,” she tweeted.

Furthermore, a statement by the Sudanese Foreign Ministry read:

“No doubt this article will contribute in addressing one of the most dangerous social practices, which constitutes a clear violation against women and a crime against women’s rights.”
