Buhari, who is the Visitor to the University of Ibadan, was represented at the ceremony by the Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration ), National Universities Commission, Chris Mayaki.

The Sultan said agreement entered with anybody must be honored because this was what God expected of any Muslim.

The ASUU recently gave the Federal Government an ultimatum on the agreement after which it would call another industrial action.

But the Sultan said this must not be allowed to happen again because students and their parents would be negatively affected.

He said, ” I will like to request the Visitor to please look into the request by ASUU. We have just heard that ultimatum has been given to the government by ASUU. I will like to call on government to look into ASUU’s requests.

Where agreements were made and reached, uphold such agreements. A good person hold on to any promise made to anybody. As Muslims, we know that almighty Allah did no say what He cannot do. It is terrible in the eyes of the almighty to say what you cannot do.

“If the government has entered into any agreement with ASUU , please try and redeem such agreements so that our universities can remain open and our children remain in school for the betterment of our great country.”

The Sultan also charged the university to ensure that students were equipped wth the skills needed by the society for the transformation of the country and the world. The traditional ruler also stressed that the university must instill character in the training of the students because this was lacking in the country today.

Abubakar while speaking on the crisis which trailed the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, called on the new VC to ensure proper reconciliation with other contestants and their supporters for the development of the university.

“There is need for reconciliation after every contest. You need to reconcile with other contestants and request their cooperation for to good of the University of Ibadan.

” Contestants should bury their hatchets to allow the University of Ibadan to move forward. And in burying their hatchets, they must not allow the handles to be left outside, it should be buried totally. We must not allow this contest to hold us down,” he added.
