Supreme Court Affirms Bala Mohammed Bauchi Governor

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been declared the duly elected Governor of Bauchi State by the Supreme Court.

This follows the dismissal of the appeal filed by the immediate past governor of the state, Abubakar Mohammed of the All Progressives Congress Congress (APC) challenging the election of Bala as governor in the March 9, 2020 guber polls in the state.

The seven-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta unanimously dismissed the appeal filed by the APC and Abubakar.

According to the lead judgement read out by Justice Dattijo Muhammad, the evidence of the appellants’ witnesses at the election tribunal was inadmissible.

He said the appellants failed to demonstrate the perversity in the concurrent judgments of both the election tribunal and the Court of Appeal, which had both affirmed the victory of Bala and his party, the PDP, to warrant the verdicts of the lower courts to be set aside.

The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) had in March last year declared Bala as the winner of the Bauchi guber poll.

He polled a total of 515,113 votes to defeat Abubakar who polled 500, 625 votes.
