The number of Cameroonians fleeing violence and seeking refuge in Nigeria has crossed the 30,000-mark, the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has said. Mr Babar Baloch, a spokesperson for UNHCR, highlighted that the needs on the ground to cater for the refugees in Nigeria were outpacing donor efforts. Africa's oldest President, Cameroon's Paul Biya, has won a seventh term in office in polls marred by widespread irregularities and voter apathy. 85-year-old Biya won with 71.2 % of the votes cast in seven regions and only lost one, out of ten regions, the state television said in a Tweet on Monday. Biya has been in power since 1982, and is Africa’s second longest serving leader.

Cross River State governor Ben Ayade has raised the alarm over the increasing number of Cameroonian refugees flocking into the state. Ayade said this when Senate President Bukola Saraki paid him a courtesy visit in Calabar on Wednesday.
