The Untold Story Of Pastor Goodheart Ekwueme’s Leaving House On The Rock

For 17 years, Pastor Goodheart Obi Ekwueme was the pillar of House on the Rock in Abuja; his teaching, swag and accessibility attracted many to the church.

But as has become a near-norm in mega churches in Nigeria, he has waved goodbye to the church owned by Pastor Paul Adefarasin to start his own ministry.

Pastor Ekwueme would not be the first mega pastor to leave the fold that thrust him on God’s stage; Pastor Dayo Olutayo left Winners Chapel to begin Good Tidings, Pastor Peter Balogun left Redeemed Christian Church of God to begin Citizens, etc.

The pastor in a 4-page letter on his resignation, said “The Great One who directs the lives of all who have truly surrendered to His Sovereign rule came knocking on the door of my heart again. I began to pick up a most ‘unusual’ prompting from the Spirit of God, that my task and assignment under the umbrella of House on the Rock was coming to an end! Naturally – and again, my first reaction was a rejection of such thoughts, and a refusal to contemplate such ‘direction’. With my natural mind and logical thinking at the time, I assumed that such prompting could not be from God! But the nudging and prompting was persistent and impossible to deny –if I’ve learned anything in my walk with Him, it is in His voice and the LEADINGS and DEALINGS of the Holy Spirit. And so after 2 years of consistent prayer and waiting upon the
Lord, as difficult as it was to finally embrace and accept that it was time for yet another “exit”.”

He went on to say that following the leading of God, “It is against this backdrop that my wife and I chose to courageously take the step of faith in obedience to God. I have prayerfully sought the understanding and permission of my spiritual father to be released from the responsibility of pastoring the wonderful local assembly and church Family of The Refuge, House on the Rock and my other responsibilities within the Rock Foundation.”

TheWhistler learnt that Ekwueme’s leaving has shaken the parent church so much that some members cried openly on Thursday, October 13 when he delivered a 15 minutes account of his stewardship.

More tears were to follow on Sunday 16 at the farewell service presided over Pastor Adefarasin in Abuja.

Our finding showed that almost half of the members of the House on the Rock have followed him to his new mission field: Horn of Revival Ministry (HORM).
