Theresa May’s Visit Not An Endorsement Of Buhari’s Re-election Bid – UK

The British government has dismissed suggestions that Prime Minister Theresa May’s recent visit to Nigeria was to endorse the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari.

British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Laura Beaufils, said this in her address, at an interactive session organised for journalists by the commission in Lagos.

Beaufils also restated the UK government’s commitment to spending £47.4million on Deepening Democracy in Nigeria Programme Phase 2 (DDiN2).

She explained that the British government has no intention to influence the outcome of the 2019 general election.

“It is important to stress that the recent visit of the Prime Minister, Theresa May, to Nigeria was not an endorsement of support for the president or any candidate in the election next year,” Beaufils said.

In August, British Prime Minister May, visited Nigeria, as part of a three-nation tour of Africa.
