‘This Is Treasonable,’ Buhari Knocked For Using ‘Revolution’ In Statement

“I am very pleased that young Nigerians are taking agriculture seriously. Through it we have the potential to feed our entire population, as well as to create jobs and prosperity for large numbers of Nigerians. I commend all the young entrepreneurs who are heeding the call.

“Some States, like Kebbi, Ogun, Lagos, Jigawa, Ebonyi and Kano are also leading the way in taking advantage of the Federal Government’s policies on agriculture, and are already seeing results. I urge other States to emulate them, and plug into the ongoing revolution to feed Nigeria.”

The Above statement was made by President Muhammadu Buhari who commended young Nigerians for keying into Agriculture.

The statement however sparked reactions from Nigerians who scolded him for using the word “revolution” in his statement.

Recall that last week, publisher of online news portal Sahara Reporters, Omowole Sowore was detained by intelligence operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS for spearheading the #RevolutionNow movement.

An Abuja high court had also granted the DSS permission filed to detain Sowore for 90 days.

The Nigerian police had earlier reacted to the protest, describing it as “treasonable felony and acts of terrorism.”

The statement had read in part, “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a video circulating on the social media by the ‘Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria and others’, inciting Nigerians, home and abroad to join a planned ‘revolution’ march against the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Monday, 5th August, 2019 with the sole aim of forcing a regime change in the country.

“The Force wishes to state unequivocally that the call amounts to treasonable felony and acts of terrorism and will therefore not stand idly-by and watch any individual or group in the society cause anarchy in the land.

“While acknowledging the rights of Nigerians to embark on protest, the Force wishes to note that such rights should not translate to a violent and forceful change of government which clearly is the meaning of ‘revolution’.”

Nigerians in reaction to the latest development, rebuked the Buhari government for using the same word which earned the arrest of the former presidential candidate in his statement.
