Toyota sold 7.49 million vehicles in the three quarters to the end of September, down 1.5 per cent from the same period last year.
Its greatest rivals, Volkswagen (VW) sold 7.43 million vehicles and American General Motors Company, sold 7.2 million.
Unfortunately for VW, the automaker’s emissions cheating scandal has forced it to suspend the sales of several key vehicles, though its figures for the first nine months are almost unchanged.
General Motors was the world’s largest automaker for almost seventy years, until Toyota surpassed it for the first time in 2008.
