Trevor Noah To Host 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards

South African comedian, television, radio host and actor, Trevor Noah will be the host of this year’s MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) in Johannesburg.

Mr. Noah, who is the host of Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show’ – a late-night television talk show in the United States, took to his Twitter handle in the early hours of Wednesday to make the announcement.

He tweeted: “Guess who’s hosting the @MTVbaseAfrica #MTVMAMA2016 See you 22 October in my hometown Johannesburg!”

The post was accompanied by a corresponding caption of the MAMA poster which displays a silhouette of Noah against the backdrop of the Johannesburg CBD with the words: “Can you guess the host?”

Noah will preside over the live 2-hour telecast at the Dome on 22 October 2016 in front of an expected 15‚000 fans‚ according to the organisers.

“I’m a huge fan of African music and achievement, and it’s going to be a massive pleasure celebrating them both at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2016 in my own home town of Johannesburg,” said Noah.

The event will celebrate talent across 18 award categories, including Best Male, Best Female and Best Collaboration. Additional categories include the Africa Re-Imagined Award and Personality of the Year.

The company brought back the awards show in 2014 after a three-year break. The event took place in Durban, South Africa, in the past couple of years, it was hosted by American actor and comedian Anthony Anderson, and the year before that fellow US comedian Marlon Wayans.

Explaining why Mr. Noah was selected as host, the Senior Vice President & Managing Director of Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN Africa), Alex Okosi said: “Trevor Noah is an outstanding entertainer‚ and testament to the amazing talent that Africa has to offer the world.

“To have him host the MAMA‚ our annual celebration of Africa music‚ creativity and achievement‚ is a powerful and inspiring message. We are delighted that our first ever show in Johannesburg will be presented by one of the city’s most loved and admired personalities.”

The sixth edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards will broadcast live on MTV Base and MTV on Saturday 22 October at 21:00 Central African Time.

The show will air live on MTV Base and MTV in Africa, it will also be transmitted worldwide on partner stations and content platforms from October onwards‚ while MTV channels around the world will broadcast a one-hour MAMA-themed MTV World Stage

This year’s MAMA edition will feature performances from such African stars as Alikiba, Babes Woduma, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Ycee and Yemi Alade, among others.

The nominations for the awards will be announced tonight (Wednesday) in Johannesburg and Lagos, Nigeria, on October 2.
