Trump Calls Attorney General Jeff Sessions ‘Beleaguered’

President Donald Trump has described his own Attorney General Jeff Sessions as “beleaguered”.

Trump in a tweet on Monday made it clear he is unhappy with Sessions, and questioning why the AG is not investigating former presidential rival, Hillary Clinton.

“So why aren’t the Committees and investigators, and of course our beleaguered A.G., looking into Crooked Hillarys crimes & Russia relations?,” Trump wrote.

The fresh attack comes days after the president expressed his discontent with Sessions for recusing himself from an FBI inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, paving the way for independent investigator Robert Mueller.

“And if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else,” Mr Trump told the New York Times last Wednesday.

During recent conversations with West Wing staff, Mr Trump has raised the possibility of replacing Mr Sessions with former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Axios reports.

It’s easy to see Trump’s not-so-subtle jabs at Sessions as a campaign to get the attorney general to quit rather than to have to take matters into his own hands. As Axios’s Jonathan Swan noted on Sunday, “If we’ve learned anything so far about this President, it’s that in real life he actually hates saying ‘you’re fired.”

Sessions was the first sitting senator to endorse Trump’s presidency. His radical positions on immigration and law enforcement also align closely with Trump’s.

The ex–Alabama senator has been one of the most aggressive of Trump’s cabinet picks, bringing to the federal level his signature severe approach to the war on drugs and other issues
