Trump Ends Obama’s Immigration Policy Protecting Undocumented Immigrants

In a move that sent shock waves across the United States, President Donald trump has withdrawn the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

U.S Attorney General Jeff Sessions made the announcement on Tuesday, describing the immigration policy which President Barack Obama signed in 2012 as “unconstitutional”, saying it denied Americans jobs

“Simply put, if we are to further our goal of strengthening the constitutional order and the rule of law in America, the Department of Justice cannot defend this type of overreach,” Sessions said.

Pulling the plug on DACA means nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children, are now on the verge of deportation.

Following the announcement, the U.S Department of Homeland Security, in a statement, says it has begun the “orderly wind down” of DACA.

The DHS says it stop processing any new applications for the program as of today and has formally rescinded the Obama administration policy.

But DHS also announced a plan to continue renewing permits for anyone whose status expires in the next six months, giving Congress time to act before any currently protected individuals lose their ability to work, study and live without fear in the US.

Reacting to the announcement, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), described Trump’s decision to end DACA as “dead wrong”, calling it a “cruel day.”

“There is no humane way to end DACA before having a permanent legislative fix in place. President Trump just threw the lives and futures of 800,000 Dreamers and their families, including my own, into fearful disarray, and injected chaos and uncertainty into thousands of workplaces and communities across America. He is using the lives of 800,000 people as pawns.”

It is now up to Congress to decide if this people should be deported or not.
