The United States has sent a strong warning to President Bashar al-Assad of Syria over potential plan by the Syrian government to use chemical weapons on civilians including children.

The US in a statement by White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the Trump administration discovered evidence that the regime of Assad could be planning another chemical weapons attack.

It said the activities were similar to those made before a suspected chemical attack in April.

“The United States has identified potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime that would likely result in the mass murder of civilians, including innocent children,” the statement reads.

“As we have previously stated, the United States is in Syria to eliminate the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

“If, however, Mr Assad conducts another mass murder attack using chemical weapons, he and his military will pay a heavy price.”

Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations has also said that Russia and Iran would be blamed for any chemical attack on Syrians.

“Any further attacks done to the people of Syria will be blamed on Assad, but also on Russia & Iran who support him killing his own people,” she tweeted.

Assad’s regime had in April reportedly attacked civilians in the town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib, Syria. Dozens died in the attack including children, which prompted President Trump to order a strike against a Syrian air base.
