Tuition Hike: Kaduna State University Shut Down Over Students’ Protests

Following weeks of protests by students, the leadership of the Kaduna State University (KASU) has shut down its activities indefinitely on Tuesday.

The students had been protesting a hike in their tuition fees by the Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led government.

The students had rejected the fees increment when it was announced a few weeks ago by the state government and thereafter began protesting.

The University management announced the closure in a statement signed by the Registrar, Samuel Manshop, on Tuesday.

According to the statement, activities in the University have ceased indefinitely.

However, the College of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Postgraduate Programmes and Part-Time programmes will continue with their activities.

“The Management of Kaduna State University wishes to notify staff, students and the general public that academic activities for undergraduate students have been suspended indefinitely.

“Postgraduate programmes, College of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Part-Time programmes are to continue with their activities,” Mr Manshop said.

He also said the University staff were expected to be at work as usual as the university leadership would inform them of any development as soon as possible.
