Twenty Die From Cholera Outbreak In Bauchi State- Health Commissioner

Bauchi state has recorded 20 deaths resulting from cholera outbreak. This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Health, Aliyu Maigoro in a press briefing on Tuesday.

Maigoro, explained that the index case was a 37- year- old housewife, who was admitted at the Burra General Hospital on April 24, 2021 in Ningi Local Government Area.

He said upon her admission, it was discovered there is an ongoing outbreak of similar disease in neighbouring communities like Sumaila and other Local Government Areas of Kano State, which may have spread to Bauchi.

Available report shows that the state recorded a total of 39,795 cases of Cholera outbreak between 2010 and 2018 as 3.9 million people lack access to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.

The latest cholera outbreak report by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in the state in 2020, showed that about 71.7 percent of the state population do not have hand washing facilities with soap, and 77 percent of the population use traditional pit toilets.

“13.5 percent use poor flush, 3.6 percent use water closet, 3.4 percent don’t use toilets while 0.75 percent use ventilated improved pit toilets,” it stated.
