Two Nigerian Women Make BBC 100 Women List
Two Nigerian women, Funke-Bucknor Obruthe and Omotade Alalade, have been named in the 2016 BBC 100 Women list.
“The BBC has chosen its list of inspirational and influential women for 2016. They will bring you groundbreaking moments of defiance, new takes on fairy tales, stories of octogenarian cheerleading, and take you inside the world of e-gaming. Others will be exploring black feminism or taking part in our first ever live festival. You will hear from some of the world’s biggest names but also from women you may never have heard of, but who all have astonishing stories to tell,” said the BBC.
Obruthe, is a 40-year-old wedding planner and Chief Executive at Zapphaire events, which has put together some high profile weddings in Nigeria and across the globe.

“What inspires me is the need to see those around me succeed, pulling the next human being up, and not accepting failure as an option,” she told the BBC.
While 30-year-old Alalade owns an infertility center, BeiBei Haven Foundation – which gives support and knowledge to those who struggle with infertility and baby loss.
The list also features 14 other African women – Aline Mukovi Neema (Congolese Activist), Egge Kande (Senegal Community Leader), Ellinah Ntombi Wamukoya (Swaziland Bishop), Gcina Mhlope (South African Writer), Lucy Finch (Malawian Hospice Founder), Mary (Kenyan Abduction Survivor), Nadia Khiari (Tunisian Cartoonist), Paula Hawkins (Zimbabwean Novelist), Prathiba Parmar (Kenyan Filmmaker), Reham el-Hour (Moroccan Cartoonist), Shriti Vadera (Ugandan Banker), Zoleka Mandela (South African Writer), Zulaikha Patel (South African Schoolgirl) and Thuli Madonsela (South African Advocate).
19-year-old American artistic gymnast and 2016 Olympic individual all-around, vault and floor gold medalist, Simone Biles, also featured in the list.
