Two Rescued As Building Under Construction Collapses In Lagos

Two adult males were rescued alive on Sunday after a one-storey building under construction collapsed in the Idumota area of Lagos State.

The incident happened at Agarawu Street, off Aroloya Central Mosque, near Idumota Bus Stop on Lagos Island.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, distress calls were received through the 767/112 Emergency Toll-Free Lines at about 1:44 p.m., prompting the activation of the state’s emergency response plan.

LASEMA’s Shark Response Team from the Lekki Base arrived at the scene at approximately 2:16 p.m. and discovered that the building had self-collapsed. Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded.

“Two adult males were rescued alive,” Oke-Osanyintolu said in a statement.

“No casualties were recorded as a result of the incident.”

While the immediate cause of the collapse remains unknown, he noted that preliminary investigations were inconclusive.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that further investigations will be conducted to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident.

The emergency response involved multiple agencies, including the LASEMA Pre-Hospital Care Unit, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and the Nigeria Police Force.

The search and rescue operation has since been concluded, while law enforcement agencies have taken charge of crowd control and security at the site.

THE WHISTLER reports that in March, a building under construction in Lekki collapsed, with at least 14 individuals rescued and taken to the hospital. However, two victims were recovered dead.
