U.S Introduces New Law To Classify Legal Immigrants As ‘Public Burdens’

The United States Government has introduced a new law to stiffen legal immigration in the country by making it more difficult for legal immigrants to stay for a long period in the country.

Under the new immigration law which becomes effective from October 15, 2019, some legal immigrants will be classified as “public burden”.

Legal immigrants who fail to meet the income standards prescribed in the new regulation will be considered “public burden”.

Foreign citizens who also receive public benefits for more than one year in any three years in the country will be considered as “public burdens” under the new immigration law.

The regulation will prohibit foreign citizens from entering the country or adjust the immigration status if they are considered to fall under this category of immigrants.

Also, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service will begin to check whether an immigrant has previously has public benefits in the country when considering his/her application for a permanent residence permit (green card).

Speaking in a statement on Tuesday, the White House said the new development would help ensure that immigrants are financially self-sufficient rather than relying on U.S. public welfare.

It said the move will help to safeguard the interests of U.S. citizens.

The California state government and the Immigration Law Center are said to have kicked against the new law and are threatening to sue the federal government for it.

In its reaction, the National Immigration Law Center described the new regulation as having a “racist motive”.
