UCL: Barca, Chelsea Win As Bayern Thrash Arsenal

Defending champions, Barcelona took a big step towards the knockout stages of the Champions League with a comfortable victory over BATE Borisov at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

Following Lionel Messi’s absence, Neymar and Luis Suarez were at it again, with the Brazilian scoring twice for the home side, including a penalty, and the Uruguayan once on the hour mark.

Barca are five points clear of Roma, who won 3-2 against Bayer Leverkusen in the other pool game. Roma’s victory prevented Barcelona from booking a place in the last 16.

Barcelona have won three and drawn one of their four games as they look to become the first club since AC Milan in 1990 to defend their title.

After the game, Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique said: “I am happy with the game. They barely caused any danger and it was a just result.

“There are lots of positives as it is never easy to win in the Champions League. We want to finish top of the group and we have to beat Roma and go from there.”

Elsewhere, English Premier League side, Chelsea eased the pressure on manager Jose Mourinho as Willian’s brilliant late winner gave them a crucial Champions League victory over Dynamo Kiev at Stamford Bridge.

The win moved the Blues into second place in Group G, three points behind leaders Porto.

The most anticipated match of the night saw Arsenal suffer their worst ever European defeat at the hands of German champions, Bayern Munich.

The Gunners had not lost on their previous two visits but were thoroughly outclassed as Bayern secured a 5-1 victory that leaves their Champions League hopes in a precarious position.

With the Gunners boss, Arsene Wenger saying his team needs to step up their performance to remain in the Champions League and keep their title hopes on track, with a north London derby against Tottenham coming up this Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.

The Frenchman said: “We were extremely poor defensively and were not at the races.

“The funny thing was that when we went forward every time we looked like we could create chances but with a defensive performance like that you are going nowhere.

“No matter how many we have, we have to give it all for a chance to qualify. We now focus on the championship on Sunday and turn up with a different performance, we are in a strong position in the league but if we play like we did today we are going nowhere.

Wenger added: “There is still a chance to qualify.

“There is a small chance but it is a real one, but we have to realise with the kind of performance we have today that our chance is at a minimum.”
