PSG had their chances, with goal attempts from Adrien Rabiot, Edinson Cavani and an 89th minute free-kick from Angel Di Maria hitting the cross bar.

The win moves Rafael Benitez’s side three points above PSG and seven clear of third-placed Shakhtar Donetsk with two games left in the group stage.

Speaking after the match, Madrid defender Sergio Ramos said: “It was not comfortable for us at all.

“We played a lot better away in Paris where we could only draw. It was a difficult game and it has given us a lot to think about.”

Elsewhere, Manchester City also secured a place in the Champions League last 16, with a fine display against rivals Sevilla.

Sevilla hit back in the 25th minutes through a Benoit Tremoulinas’ header, before Wilfried Bony rounded off the scoring in the 36th minute sweeping in Jesus Navas low cross, for a 3-1 win.

Other results of the night, Manchester United beat Ahmed Musa’s CSKA Moscow 1-0, Shakster Donsesk beat Malmo 4-0, PSV Eindhoven defeated VFL Wolfsburg 2-0 and Benfica with a narrow 2-1 win over Turkish giant, Galatasaray.
