The UN Security Council had recommended him for a second term prior to his unanimous acceptance by the assembly.

Each term for the UN Secretary General’s post is five years.

On Friday, without a vote, the assembly’s President, Volkan Bozkir, announced Guterres’ re-election in line with the decision of the Security Council.

On his part, Guterres expressed appreciation to the assembly for giving him another five-year tenure.
