UN Saddened By Volcanic Eruption In DR Congo, 14 Killed

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has reacted to the volcanic eruption that took place in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, leading to deaths and displacement of people.

Guterres tweeted on Monday that the UN would provide aid to the country at such a time as this.

“I’m deeply saddened by the lives lost and the damage caused by the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“@UN staff are supporting the Government’s efforts to assist those affected, through the provision of emergency humanitarian aid,” he tweeted.

A UN agency in DRC reported that on Sunday, the said city of Goma ” turned to crimson red around 1915 hours when the Volcanic Mountain Nyiragongo erupted.”

On his part, DRC government spokesman, Patrick Muyaya, stated that the country was on top of the situation.

“After the assessment meeting with the military governor and his team, the government delegation carries out a field visit to better understand the extent of the damage,” he tweeted on Monday.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports that “fifteen were killed, including nine in a traffic accident as residents fled, four who tried to escape Munzenze prison in Goma and two who were burned to death” following the eruption.
