UN Urges FG To Fund Prevention Of Violence Against Women

The United Nation (UN) has urged the federal government and relevant stakeholders in Nigeria to provide funds and essential services geared towards preventing gender-based violence, including sexual, verbal, emotional, and psychological assaults or threats.

UN tweeted about this on Wednesday in commemoration of the International Day to End Violence Against Women.

It stressed that an end to such flawed behavior can only be attained through a collective approach.

“The United Nations system in Nigeria urges the govt of Nigeria; civil society; the media; traditional and religious leaders and all stakeholders in positions of power and influence to turn the ‘Tide on Gender Based Violence in Nigeria in the midst of #COVID19’.

“We must fund, & make sure funding is flexible & available for women’s rights organizations, that essential services are available, and funds for GBV prevention included in fiscal stimulus package,” it tweeted.

According to a UN Report on Wednesday, slavery, sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation; child marriage, intimate partner violence, sexual violence and harassment, have intensified since the covid-19 pandemic.

On the side of the federal government, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, had on October 8, said that the nation remained committed to the eradication of sexual and gender-based violence.

“We must therefore appreciate the sincere commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to the eradication of SGBV and the provision of requisite sustainable services to survivors,” he had said.
