University Explains Why Student Hemp Smokers, Sellers Are Handed Over To NDLEA

The Management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) has explained the reason behind handing over of students caught smoking or selling illicit drugs on the campus to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Prince Emma, told THE WHISTLER  that about 12 students of the university caught with Indian Hemp have been handed over to the NDLEA for proper rehabilitation.

He said: “The reason the institution hands these set of students who deals with drugs to the NDLEA, is for rehabilitation and further counseling.

“We choose not to hand them over to the police because it’s not in their jurisdiction to act on matters related to drugs but the NDLEA.”

The university on Monday announced the suspension of another student, Newton Ezegbola Nsiegbe, of the Department of Political Science.

Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, in a statement, said Newton was apprehended by the university security personnel in the hostel with over 1.75 grams of substance suspected to be Indian hemp which he allegedly smokes and sells to his colleagues on campus.

The statement added that he had also been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and that the matter has been referred to the Students Disciplinary Committee to determine his fate as a student of the university.

“There will be no peace for those who want to dent the image of our university. Our God will continue to expose them.

“Parents can’t send their children here only for them to turn out to become drug addicts. As an institution of learning, we will not condone that, no way,” said the statement.

Since the beginning of this year, about 12 students have been reportedly suspended for drugs and handed over to the NDLEA.
