University Of Ibadan Appoints Prof. Idowu Olayinka As New VC

Olayinka who is taking over from Prof. Isaac Adewole, whose tenure ends on November 30, was a professor of geology, and is the first VC of the school to emerge from the Faculty of Science since the school was established in 1948.

While making the announcement at the school’s Senate Chamber, Pro Chancellor of the university, Dr. Umar Mustapha, said the choice of Olayinka was unanimous after three candidates were recommended by the selection committee from the six candidates that were shortlisted for the position.

He added that that due process was followed in the appointment.

He said, “When the process started, we advertised in the national newspapers for the vacancy of the office of vice chancellor. A total number of 13 applied and after conducting interviews, six candidates emerged.

“Out of the six candidates, the first three candidates were recommended and at the end, the best of them all, Professor Idowu Olayinka, emerged.

“I hereby official announce Professor Idowu Olayinka as the new VC of the University of Ibadan. Professor Olayinka, 57, is a professor of Geology and has over 20 years of experience in this institution.”

In his response, the incoming VC acknowledged the task ahead of him, adding that students of the university will remain a topmost priority without playing down the welfare of the staff.

He said, “We will continue to ensure that UI is globally relevant. We will continue to ensure that it maintains its first position.

“There will be accelerated development through consultation. We will ensure that it becomes globally competitive and nationally relevant”.

Also speaking, the outgoing VC, Professor Isaac Adewole assured the new VC of his maximum support.

He said, “As for me, my job comes to an end in November first and it marks the beginning of a new era. I thank everyone for the opportunity giving to me. I am the luckiest person, whosoever that occupies this position is only lucky.

“It is my hope that members of the university community will extend the hands of fellowship given to me while in the office to my successor.

“I congratulate the new VC on his victory.”
