UPDATED: I’m Still Alive Says Man Who Drank ‘Gutter’ Water Over Buhari’s Re-Election

Aliyu Mohammed Sani, a middle-aged man from Bauchi whose video went viral on social media after he was seen drinking water he scooped from drainage, has debunked rumours of his death.

Sani’s rumoured death had been widely reported following a public stunt where he was seen in high spirit bathing in the gutter to celebrate President Muhammadu Buhari’s defeat of his main challenger, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and other presidential candidates who contested in the February 23 election.

He was said to have died from gastrointestinal bleeding which he reportedly incurred from drinking contaminated water.

But speaking exclusively to Daily Trust after reports of his death went viral, Sani said: “As I am talking to you now, I am on my way back to Bauchi after we finished a painting work somewhere outside Bauchi,” adding that, “It is true, I made the promise before the elections and I fulfilled it and I have no regrets.”

He had become an internet sensation after his public stunt made it to the social media. The staunch Buhari supporter was said to have vowed to bath for ten minutes in the gutter and drink the contaminated water if President Buhari should get re-elected into office.

Following rumours of his death, Nigerians took to twitter to share their thoughts:
