Van Persie’s Volley Voted Best Goal In Premier League Era

Netherlands international Robin Van Persie’s scintillating volley against Aston Villa in 2013 has been voted the best goal of the Premier League era.

The 33-year-old Fenerbahçe striker won the award after a vote among players who had scored more than 100 goals in the Premier League at the Legends of Football ceremony in London.

The event which hosted Premier League legends to include Alan Shearer, Ryan Giggs, Emily Heskey and Michael Owen, saw the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Van Persie emerge victorious after the votes.

Wayne Rooney found Van Persie with a long pass before the Dutchman connected perfectly with a left-footed volley to beat keeper Brad Guzan to wrap up United’s 20th and Sir Alex Ferguson’s final league title at Old Trafford.

“It’s a huge honour,” he said. “It’s the hardest league in the world.

“On a goal like that, you don’t really think about it. You just want to make the most of it and see what happens. But you need a bit of luck as well.

“It was the first title I won and it was a huge moment for Manchester United. What I like about that goal is the whole story that was behind it.”

The Legends of Football event in London celebrated 25 seasons of Premier League football and raised money for charity.
