We Can’t Sack Embattled Judges, NJC Replies NBA

Following the request made by President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Abubakar Mahmoud, to the National Judicial Council (NJC), that judges arrested by the DSS over alleged corruption should step aside pending their vindication in court, the NJC has responded in the negative.

The NJC said that it lacked the constitutional power to carry out such an assignment.

“Is unacceptable to the NJC; as it breaches the 2014 Revised Judicial Discipline Regulations formulated by NJC pursuant to Section 160 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended,” the NJC’s acting director of information, Soji Oye, said in a statement.

Recall that the NJC had condemned the raid of the judges’ homes in Rivers state by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS), who acted on President Muhammadu Buhari’s order, two weeks ago.
