We Will Use Technology To Drive Reduction Of Gas Flaring-NLNG

The Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Limited has said that embracing technology and promoting industrial growth in the gas sector is a major factor in reducing the huge amount of gas flaring and methane losses in Nigeria.

Speaking at the World LNG Virtual summit, The Chief Executive Officer, NNLG Limited, Tony Attah said that with technology and growth in the oil industry, there will be home for the gas either by reinjecting or creating value.

He said, “I support the global ambition to support the planet and I support sustainability but from our point of view, we believe technology will be quite fundamental.

“Where can we deploy technology to be more cost competitive, more efficient and responsible in terms of achieving zero leak in pursuit of the net zero ambition in the full value chain?

“From our point of view, historically, Nigeria was number two in the league of flaring nations. That was before Nigeria LNG came into being. The entire industry did not have the receptacle to take the gas.

“Since Nigeria LNG came into the picture, we brought gas flaring from about 65 per cent to about less than 20 per cent today. Last time I checked the league table, we were number 7.”

Speaking further, Attah noted that the NLNG, during the COVID-19 pandemic sealed the deal with EPC as a testament of what Nigeria’s ambition is in respect to gas.

“We want to grow to 30MTPA with our #Train7Project. We believe it is time for gas in Nigeria and the World in general. Today, we are number nine in terms of proven reserves of gas. We have the ambition to become number 4 with 600tcf unproven reserve.

“On energy transition, our bet is on gas. Our bet is on LNG. However we recognise that energy has been in transition.

“We recognise the world’s population is set to grow to about nine billion in 2040/2050. This means there will be demand for more energy.

“The thing is that the world wants more, but cleaner and cheaper. This is where the conversation is; on what will be the best energy mix that will define the transition into the future.

“We believe gas will have a major role irrespective of what energy mix play out in the transition. There are other energy sources like hydrogen. But gas is very positioned to partner with other energy in the mix.”

For gas to take that centre stage, he said there has to be clear focus on the competitiveness based on technology and cost.

This, he stated, defines what NLNG is focusing on.
