We’ll Tackle Flood Headlong, Wike Assures Rivers People

Nyesom Wike, Rivers State governor has said his administration will tackle environmental challenges headlong after heavy rainfall ravaged most parts of Port Harcourt, the state capital and its environs.

The flooding which submerged thousands of houses, roads and streets was as a result of heavy rains, which started in the early hours of last Saturday, and lasted till Sunday afternoon.

Speaking after he inspected some areas impacted by the two-day rainfall, Governor Wike sympathized with affected residents, assuring them that his administration will work with relevant agencies to tackle the menace.

The governor, who inspected the flooded areas with officials from Julius Berger and State Ministry of Works, directed relevant government agencies to commence work immediately.

He directed the continuous de-silting of all major canals in the town.

He also advised residents in Rivers State to desist from dumping refuse in water channels, as they lead to blockage of water channels, which in-turn causes flooding.

He further urged the people to avoid building residential houses on natural water ways.

Also speaking, Sam Ngbor, Liaison Manager of Julius Berger Plc assured the governor that the company will work with the state government to resolve the challenges posed by the flooding.
