We’re Dying Without Pension, Retired Workers In Rivers State Threaten Protest

Pensioners in Rivers State have lamented that two months after a resolution was reached between the organized labour and Rivers State Government, to set up a tripartite Committee to resolve all outstanding issues including payment of pension allowances and gratuities, nothing has been done.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Rivers State Chapter, Mr. Collins Nwankwo, in a radio interview on Tuesday morning in Port Harcourt monitored by THE WHISTLER, said: “Since the organized labour suspended their planned protest of 7th September, government has taken no action to address their demands.

“The Pensioners are pained that a lot of them are dying everyday without accessing their pension and gratuities, after spending 35 years serving the Rivers State Government.”

Nwankwo said some retirees who had gone through the process of biometric exercise and data capturing have not been placed on monthly pension and are suffering untold hardship to fend for themselves and families.

“The union had resolved to issue a two weeks ultimatum to the state government to begin the process of implementing all the agreement signed by government and the Organized Labour concerning pension issues or the Pensioners would be forced to take to the streets to protest.” He said.
