‘When I Was Rolled Into Theatre, I Cried Seeing Everything They’ll Use On Me’- Woman Recounts Childbirth Experience

Mrs. Glory Ufom gave birth to her daughter, via a  C-section on September 20, 2017,  barely two  years after her second child, a son, was delivered without any surgical interventions. The births of her third child, a girl, could not have been more different.

As many women had experienced or heard from others, she was hoping to put to bed naturally the way she had her first and second, but the story changed at the last hour. She was made to go through a caesarian section to have her baby and it was not such a traumatizing experience.

As she recounted her experience to THE WHISTLER, it turned out she went through more fear than pain.

“I was induced the day before I went to the hospital, and my water broke overnight while I slept but after several trials to push and have a normal delivery it was not possible and I was gradually losing my strength. I was on oxygen the entire time because both of our heart rates were so low.  My little princess was in distress and was stuck at 10 centimeters. After a few minutes I heard from a distance “all we can do now to save her is to open her up” right then and there. I was praying it was not me there are having a delivery strategy on. But too bad my fears came to pass,” she explained as she tried to recollect.

After she learnt she would have to go through a caesarean section, she became apprehensive. “It was terrifying because I never envisaged such; I was not at all prepared emotionally or mentally for a C-section,” she said

But as a woman of faith, she somehow believed all would be well. Her husband and family were there also to comfort her. She also had strong faith in the doctors at the hospital, believing they’re diligent professionals who had done it for several other women.

“when I was rolled into the theatre, I saw everything they were going to use on me, I was crying and got so scared and felt I would  be damaged irreparably.it dawned on me that this could be my last moment on earth  but I hanged my heavy heart on God.

“I was given some injections which made the lower parts of my body numb. So, I was literally seeing everything and also gisting with the team of doctors. It was fun until my bundle of joy came out.”

But after the momentary happiness, the pain of the surgery overcame her. “ I had to endure the pain and stay strong for my baby. At that moment I just wished the pain would go away but it kept increasing with every tick of the clock but before I knew it I was strong and fit to behold my baby and then go home,” she recounted with a smile.

Asked to choose between giving birth naturally and through C-Section, she said : “If you ask me which of the birth do you prefer? I will say vaginal birth where I have to endure the pain, and then push my baby out and go about my normal duties. Unlike the CS, you won’t feel any pain at the moment but months to come you are still very fragile.”

But she had no regrets about the C-Section because it was an experience that showed her she had the courage and stamina to go through any situation in life.

“I don’t feel any sort of regret because this just proved to me that I can be a bad ass in anything in life. I’m so proud of the scares , I couldn’t be more proud of myself because now I have an experience to share with you.”

She however has a good advice for young women or would be mothers. “If you have to make a choice between a vaginal birth and a C-section because of some problem that comes up, don’t be afraid of the C-section. As long as you trust the doctors and the hospital you should be just fine. I’ve heard some horror stories, but for the most part, experience is the only true teacher.

“Allow yourself to be sad or angry; the truth is once that baby’s here you won’t care.”
