‘Where Is The Power’, Buhari Group Asks Obasanjo

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has come hard on ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, asking him to explain how he spent the $16 billion allocated to the power sector from 1999-2007.

On Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari asked how the $16 billion was spent on power during Obasanjo’s administration.

The president made the query while receiving members of the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) who paid a courtesy call on him today at the State House in Abuja.

The support group were led by Hameed Ali, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service.

“Where was the power after a former president claimed to have spent $16 billion on the project?” Buhari had asked.

But responding swiftly Obasanjo referred the president “and his co-travellers” to read chapters 41, 42, 43 and 47 of his book titled “My Watch”.

The former president advised Buhari to engage the help of his media aides “If he cannot read the three-volume book”.

However, in a statement on Thursday, issued by Austin Braimoh and Cassidy Madueke, chairman and secretary of the BMO, said Obasanjo is yet to answer the question on how he “squandered the $16 billion electricity fund”.

“Nigerians may be many things, but they are not fools. They would definitely have been able to tell if the $16bn allocated to power projects was actually expended as proposed,” the statement read.

“Even the poorest mathematicians among us would have been able to calculate the disbursement of that amount in the increased number of hours per day their light bulbs, television sets and refrigerators stayed on.

“It would have been impossible to not feel the impact of the $16 billion dollars on power, if the money had actually been spent on power.

“Chief Obasanjo exculpates himself by referring to probes and investigations which found him blameless. But, the fact remains that the invisible $16bn power projects took place under his watch.”

Recall that Obasanjo has in the past months written a letter and have consistently criticized Buhari for poor handling of the economy and dividing Nigeria.
