Why Alex Badeh’s Wife, Sons May Not Attend His Burial

Mrs Mary Iya Badeh, the widow of the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, AVM Alex Badeh, who was murdered by unknown gunmen on Tuesday, may not attend his funeral according latest report.

Badeh’s two sons – Alex (Jnr.) and Kam – may also be absent at their father’s burial for fear that security agencies may seize their international passports and stop them from returning to their base in the United States.

Both are said to be on the watch-list of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) over a N3.6 billion corruption trial involving the ex-defence chief.

They were said to have left Nigeria and have been in the States since 2016 following Badeh’s trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

A family source who spoke to Punch on the matter said, “I have spoken with them (Badeh’s wife and sons) and I don’t know for now if they will be coming for the burial but it is highly unlikely. Their father has just been killed under controversial circumstances and the government has not removed them from the watch list. If they return and their passports are seized and they are not allowed to return, it would be a double tragedy.

The source added that, “Everybody is still in shock so we cannot say for now if they will be coming but since they are Christians, there is no rush. A lot can happen before then.”
