Why Kano Residents Think Ganduje Wants To Make Money With COVID-19 – Ex-Speaker Na’Abba

A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, has explained why Kano State residents allegedly believe that Governor Abdullahi Ganduje wants to use the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to “divert funds to his pocket”.

Na’Abba, who was speaker from 2000 to 2003, blamed the Kano residents’ lack of trust in Ganduje’s administration for their disbelief in the existence of coronavirus (COVID-19).

According to the former speaker, the governor’s initial request of N15 billion COVID-19 intervention from the federal government was partly responsible for the distrust.

“The lack of trust in the governor by the people, occasioned by many instances of maladministration, has resulted in most people not believing that the disease even exists,” Na’Abba told The SUN in an interview.

“The belief is that he wants to use COVID-19 to divert funds to his pocket, especially with the N15 billion request he made to the Federal Government. It is only through the special grace of God that more people than what has been recorded have not been infected.”

Governor Ganduje had made the N15 billion intervention request after the federal government released N10 billion to the Lagos State government to fight the virus in the state.

Presidential aide, Femi Adesina, had in May explained that the presidency ignored Ganduje’s request because it was not convinced about the situation in the state.

Adesina, who spoke on a radio program ‘As E Dey Hot’ on Wazobia FM, Kano, had said that the federal government assisted Lagos with the said sum because it was satisfied with the initial efforts made by the state government.

“Any other state that is also doing its work and is not complaining, and is not saying bring money, bring money, bring money, the federal government will do all that is necessary to do to assist,” the presidential aide had said.
